The foundations

Does your skin type matter?

Sometimes it’s important to go back to the basics, back to things we think we know or understand and skin types are one of those things.

So why is it so important to know your skin type?

1. Skin type determines the kinds of products (creams or gels) and ranges of products you would benefit from using and should rather opt for.
2. Additional cosmetic procedures you elect to do such as peels and even facials can be selected for or tailored to your skin type.

Asking yourself a couple of questions, taking a close look or even having an evaluation will best help to classify yourself into one of the 4 categories of normal, dry, oily and combination skin.

Normal skin - Has a good balance of sebum and moisture, tends to look more radiant with minimal pores and blemishes (sounds perfect right…)
Dry skin - Produces less sebum than normal skin, leaving it with a lower moisture content, frequent rough feeling as well as flaking or itching of the skin.
Oily skin - Characterised by more sebum being produced. Skin tends to have larger, more visible pores and may appear shiny. This skin type is more prone to acne, but can be triggered by genetics, hormones or even stress.
Combination skin - As the name implies is a mixture of the above skin types. The area of the forehead, chin and nose (t-zone) tends to be oilier with more visible pores, while the cheek area is drier.

So how do you check?

So what does this mean for you?

While normal and combination skins benefit from use of regular cleansers and standard moisturizers, oily and dry skin types require a little more attention to your product labeling.

For oily skin you should look out for gel cleansers and oil-free moisturizers. Dry skin on the other hand enjoys cream or oil cleansers and moisturizers with higher oil to water content.

Knowing your skin type helps you make more informed, appropriate skincare choices and really is a fundamental element to building your skincare regimen.

Remember always in this process, what works for others may not work for you and its important to not only see yourself as an individual, but evaluate what makes you unique.
