Common dermatological conditions

Acne

You may have troublesome acne or pimples which keep coming back no matter what you do. This can often be successfully treated with skin cream or oral medication.

Eczema

It can be very uncomfortable when patches of your skin are scaly, itchy, bumpy and / or red and in some cases your skin is cracked. This can be treated through both lifestyle changes and the use of ointments.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is an inflammatory disorder of the skin where your immune system stimulates the cells to turnover more quickly resulting in red and scaly areas of the skin.

Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the skin that causes persistent redness, flushing of the skin with visible dilated blood vessels as well as pimples usually on the cheeks nose, chin and forehead.

Skin cancers

Skin cancer is one of the commonest cancers worldwide. Living in South Africa with are at increased risk with our beautiful climate and stunning landscape which make being outdoors so much more attractive.

Vitiligo

Vitiligo is a skin disorder where the skin and even the hair loses its colour resulting in white patches appearing on the skin and in the hair.

Pigmentation

Pigmentation is a term used to describe the darkening of the skin. It typically presents as brown or even greyish patches on the skin. Pigmentation is a symptom rather than a diagnosis and may be the result of several conditions or insults to the skin.

Melasma

Melasma is a specific form of pigmentation referred to by some as the mask of pregnancy. Melasma results from the pigment producing cells (melanocytes) producing too much pigment/colour (pigment).

Moles

A mole, or what your doctor may refer to as a benign melanocytic nevus, is a type of skin growth of the pigment producing cells (melanocytes).
Most occur in childhood and grow as we do.

Melanoma

Melanoma is a cancer of the pigment producing cells (melanocytes) in our skin. It is a highly aggressive cancer and unlike other skin cancers it may spread quite rapidly to other organs in the body.

Hair loss

Hair loss or alopecia is another area which Dermatologists specialise in. Hair loss may be scarring (irreversible) or non-scarring. It’s important to remember that alopecia is not a diagnosis, but rather a symptom of a number of underlying causes.

Surgical dermatology

Dr Lauren Knight offers various surgical treatment options for both benign and malignant skin conditions.

Scarring

Scar formation is part of the body’s response to repair itself. The process involves the laying down of collagen and elastin (repair fibres) to repair the defect. While this is a normal process following injury or inflammation of the skin, abnormalities can occur.

Pregnancy skin changes

Pregnancy comes with a significant degree of joy, but it is not all rainbows and roses and along with expected changes some unexpected conditions may pop up leading to unnecessary distress.
As your hormones change some skin changes may be noticed.

Paediatric dermatology

Birthmarks

These are skin marks that are present at birth or soon after. They may present as red, white or brown areas on the skin. Birth marks represent an overgrowth or abnormality in the blood vessels (red/purple/pink/white) or clusters of pigment cells (brown or darker black spots).

Nappy rash

Nappy rashes are very common.
The warm, moist, covered environment under the nappy provides the perfect setting for irritation if not infection. This commonly presents with redness, blisters, moist or even scaly skin.

Warts

Warts are common rough skin-coloured lumps and bumps caused by infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is spread by contact with an infected person. As we age our immune system becomes stronger and can deal with the infection by itself. In children with weaker immune systems warts tend to be more common.

Molluscum contagiosum

Molluscum contagiosum is another common viral infection that happens in children caused by the pox virus. Infections occur in the same way and for the same reason that warts do.

Cosmetic dermatology

Botox is a neurotoxin which we use to decrease the transfer of signals across the junctions between muscles.

This prevents the contraction and movement of muscles, relaxing them and decreasing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Book an aesthetic consult to discuss your hopes and individualized treatment plan. Should you choose to go ahead with treatment, the consultation fee will be waved.

Unfortunately, aesthetic treatments can’t be done in conjunction with medical dermatology appointments as both are specialized services that require their appropriate allocated time.

Micro-needling

Micro-needling is the use of medical grade needles that create micro punctures into the skin to an area called the Dermis. Dermis is where the collagen is made. Collagen is what gives your skin structure and strength. The skin responds to the controlled injury and the process of skin rejuvenation begins.
There is some downtime post a Micro-needling session, the area will feel sunburnt and red for 24hr-48hrs. The appropriate homecare will be discussed with you in your consultation.

Chemical Skin Peel

Chemical skin peels are used to resurface the skin. They assist in the removal of dead skin cells, which are causing the skin to look dull, sallow and contribute to congestion.
There are various types of chemical skin peels, some that will make you shed like a snake and others that will increase your glow and radiance. More downtime aka flaking doesn't mean better. It all depends on what we want to treat and the result we're wanting to achieve.
